Today is not only Earth Day, it is the 40th anniversary of the first Earth Day. My favorite Earth Day I was at the base of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco at an Earth Day festival with some very earthy type folks (I resisted using the “H” word here). It was a good celebration, people were talking and dancing.
But I have to confess, that this day doesn’t seem all that special any more. Perhaps, thinking positively, it is because we have come to realize that the importance of environmental themes are too important for just one day.

There are some pretty lame Earth Day online activities out there. If you are bored check out:
The Lorax’s Save the Trees Game
and
Earth Day Slider Puzzle

There are good Earth/environment-related activities at Adaptive Curriculum. Plants should be held in high regard today because of their role in using carbon dioxide and producing nutrients and oxygen. You should check out the free Activity Object “Plant’s Need For Photosynthesis” at http://www.adaptivecurriculum.com/us/preview.html
In the subscription there are
Plant Survival: The Xeroscape Garden

Hidden Heroes: Bacteria

Habitat Designer: Panda

Of course, local activities can be very meaningful to learners, such as making recycling bins for the classroom (http://www.teachervision.fen.com/tv/printables/penguin/KKazoo7_EarthDay4.pdf). Or they can “Green their Gardens” (http://earthday.nature.org/garden/). It might raise points to talk about with students, but you will probably have to go to San Francisco if you want to dance on Earth Day.
