Tonight, as I understand it, “After Armadeddon” will air at 8 PM on the History Channel. It does present interesting opportunities for science teachers to talk about student ideas and feelings related to future and past disasterous conditions on Earth. It is part of a week of disasters at the History Channel. Here is a description of the show:

After Armageddon: – 08:00-10:00 PM

What have past acts of destruction taught us about what will happen to mankind after the apocalypse? Is it inevitable that disaster will someday strike America on an unprecedented level? How has history prepared us? History’s most dramatic events–Hiroshima, 9/11, Hurricane Katrina and others–are examined and analyzed with hard data gathered from their massive aftereffects. The disappearance of water and food supplies, the effects of deteriorated sanitation and health care on the remaining population, and the increased use of violence as a means of survival–all illustrate how societies have responded and survived.

I have an especially keen interest in this show as my son, Hy Rillero, spent just over two-weeks filming his segment, with many long days of work. I am hoping that much of his vignette survives the editing process for this two-hour special. No matter what happens it was a great experience for Hy to work with Director Stephen Kemp (
Raw-TV). In Hy’s section, a respiratory virus has wiped out 80% of the US population and he chronicles his family’s quest to survive.  The photo is of Hy and his film mom and dad.

  1. After watching the show, I realize that the summary by the History Channel wasn’t so strong. Here is a much better synopsis by Ranjan Bhaduri http://www.thaindian.com/newsportal/entertainment/after-armageddon-shown-on-history-channel_100300015.html

“Jan 6, (THAINDIAN NEWS) History Channel aired a docudrama named ‘After Armageddon’ yesterday. It was produced by Randy Murray Productions. The compelling docu-drama narrates the tale of what changes happen to North America after the region is struck by a severe flu pandemic. It wipes out an overwhelming majority of the population. The film is an eye opener for those who do not take problems like global warming and environmental pollution seriously. It depicts how close the human civilization is to an impending disaster.

“After Armageddon” depicts the life of a family hailing from L.A. who struggle to survive among the epidemic struck region and battles all odds. The father in this family is a paramedic and takes every precaution to keep the disease at bay. The film also has a narrator who informs the viewers about the severity of the situation. It shows the US president being shifted to a safer location. The man continues his work despite the opposition from his family.

The son and wife of the man wants to move to a safer location but he refuses to oblige them. It is quite horrific to see armed gangs looting houses for scarcity of food and essential commodities. Finally, the family is forced to leave their house and find a safer location. They are compelled to kill a rogue and it takes a toll on their mental health. The filmmaker excels as he depicts the process of degeneration among humans in such a severe situation. Though the film ends with a hope for mankind, the message it delivers is spine chilling.”

I thought it was a good show. Your son did a good job acting like a normal teen. The show definitely made me think, and I definitely had a feeling of unease when it was over. I hope he enjoyed doing it. Ted

  3. Hi Ted,
Thanks. I do think they caught the human side of what might occur. My son did enjoy the process, but it was time consuming.

  4. It was defeating. I was cutting coupons as I watched this. It made me feel “what”s the point”? I’m trying to say pennies nd t won’t matter n a few years, that is, if it happens this way.

  5. I thought it was a good look at what humans are prone to do if faced with such a disaster . How the greed hordding and killing of others comes easy when trying to defend your family .But at the same time most people turn a blind eye of what could happen for they cant contral there own behavior now for as something as simple as being cut off on your way to work and then pulling out a gun .It just goes to show that in the end we are deston to distroy each other. Also how unprepared we realy are . After watching the show it bothered me for a couple days but it was a great reality of things to come if we dont change are ways……..!!!!!

  6. Thanks I learned allot of good things by stopping by here tonight.
